62nd Keukenhof flower exhibition open.

Historical garden
The historical garden is one of the most striking Keukenhof attractions. An oasis that lives and breathes the atmosphere of a historic castle garden. Various collections of historical spring bulbs and tuberous plants are on display, including old tulip varieties from the Hortus Bulborum and 17th-century daffodils. Species that were sometimes cultivated for hundreds of years and are now almost impossible to buy. It is an unknown fact that, in early spring, this is also the warmest spot in Keukenhof, on the benches lining the slate wall.

Keukenhof inspirational gardens
In Spring Keukenhof and the surrounding area are magically transformed into a sea of colours and scents. Strolling through the park visitors get inspired to accomplish the same in their own gardens. Everyone would love to have a sparkling ribbon of spring flowers winding through the garden, a river of blue Muscari nestled among the trees or perhaps a border in which the most special tulips show their beauty.

Bulb flowers can be used in many different surprising ways. To give a more specific impression on using them in a domestic garden, Keukenhof has created seven Inspirational Gardens. It is possible for everyone to enjoy these Spring beauties at home. The active gardener makes plans in the Autumn and plants the bulbs before the end of November. For those who missed this planting moment bulbs already planted in pots can be bought and easily planted in the garden or in flowerpots on the terrace or balcony.

The gardens are inhabited by the Van Beieren family. The family members explain how they have fulfilled their green dreams.

A detailed report, including planting scheme, garden design, furniture, can be seen on the Keukenhof website from the 1th of March 2011. The Inspirational Gardens are situated near the Mill.

Garden trends 2011

Lifestyles are changing, involving more rest and time spend with our loved ones becoming more important. We are no longer proud of the fact that we work 60 hours a week but are rejoiced to work in a more flexible way enabling us to spent precious time together and at home.

This reflects in our outdoor environment. Nowadays gardens, the extension of our homes, are used almost throughout the year. Gardens and decorations reflect of the personality of its inhabitants.

Gardens become greener and forms organic and more natural. The diversity of plants is increasing. We'll let our children see how everything grows and thrives. The experience of planting bulbs in the Autumn and the miracle of the flowers in the Spring is a good example of this. We plant vegetables, fruit and herbs, what ever tasted better than fresh from our own backyard. Sustainable garden materials and accessories are chosen, preferable from the immediate vicinity, the nursery from the neighbouring village, the traditional toolmaker, the farmer around the corner.

Once again we are aware of the immense beauty of nature and take the opportunity to recharge in our own court after the hustle and bustle of the day. The trends for 2011 can be found in the seven Inspirational Gardens at Keukenhof, ranging from romantic to modern, from tough to sweet, with the colour yellow as a striking accent.
